Malaysia’s total trade in June 2018 grew by 11% from June 2017 to reach a value of 151.27 billion Malaysian ringgits. The expansion was supported mainly by higher trade with China, ASEAN countries, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, the European Union (EU), Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Exports from Malaysia to China in June 2018 amounted to 11.4 billion ringgits, to Singapore – 10.7 billion, to the United States – 7 billion and to Hong-Kong – 6.1 billion. Main sources of Malaysian imports in June 2018 were China (15.4 billion ringgits), Singapore (8 billion), Japan and Taiwan (5.5 billion ringgits both).
According to the Malaysia Foreign Trade Statistics Database, exports of petroleum spirit for motor vehicles (HS code 271012) in June 2018 decreased by 31% compared with the previous month and amounted to 1.1 billion ringgits. The main destinations for this commodity were Indonesia (440 million ringgits), Singapore (378 million ringgits) and Thailand (183 million ringgits).
Total exports from Malaysia of petroleum oils and oils from bituminous minerals, not containing biodiesel, not crude, not waste oils (HS code 271019) reached 4 billion ringgits in June 2018. Singapore (1.4 billion ringgits), Vietnam (0.7 billion ringgits) and Bangladesh (0.3 billion ringgits) were the largest buyers of this commodity in June.
Exports from Malaysia expanded by 7.6% year-on-year to 78.66 billion ringgits, sustaining the positive momentum for 4 straight months, while Malaysian imports rose by 14.9% to 72.61 billion ringgits. The trade surplus was recorded at 6.04 billion ringgits. This was the 248th consecutive month of trade surplus since November 1997.
On a month-on-month basis, total trade, exports, imports and trade surplus contracted by 3.1%, 4.2%, 1.9% and 25.5%, respectively. Total trade in the second quarter of 2018 (Q2 2018) amounted to 462.84 billion Malaysian ringgits, an expansion of 8% from Q2 2017. Total exports from Malaysia in the quarter reached 245.01 billion ringgits, 8.2% higher compared to the same period last year and imports increased by 7.7% to 217.83 billion ringgits. Trade surplus in Q2 2018 was recorded at 27.18 billion ringgits, a 12.9% increase from 24.07 ringgits billion registered in Q2 2017.
